Cutting Video Samples

So your video is complete! Yay! Now it’s time to pick a part to “cut” as a sample for potential buyers! So how do you find the right part worth showing?

One of the benefits of video editing is that clients are generally intelligent enough to figure out which parts are “cut” and which parts are fluid — kind of like a movie preview at a movie theater, the director can choose to rearrange the timing of scenes. Unlike audio-only recordings which rely on one fluid sample, a video sample can be spliced any way you like it!

What sells the most: Fast paced splices. Why? Research shows that many online users have short attention spans. Most commercials on tv have so many cuts in them that sometimes it’s hard to follow along. If you watch a Victoria’s Secret commercial, same thing. You might see only one 1/2 second flashed scene of someone’s face while the rest is on the lingerie — and that’s to draw the mystery — the watcher wants to see more — they subconsciously want to see WHO they saw! So less is more. Less is more. Less is more.

If your video contains nudity, I recommend censoring it. I fucking hate censorship too but trust me, it sells AND you can display it on porn-heavy websites as a form of advertisement without worrying about moderators giving you a hard time.

Put your credits at the end rather than the beginning. People get bored easily and when horny, they want to see ACTION first. Show what you have to offer, then at the end mention where they can see more (or list it at the bottom of the screen).

Personally, and this is me as an average customer, I won’t bother watching a video sample if credits are still rolling after 10 seconds. Instead, I move on. I know I’m not the only one :) The first scene needs to capture the viewer so they CANNOT look away! Eyes are always a great place to start.

Good luck!
