So how exactly do you figure out the best part of the recording to display?

I’ll share a little secret. It’s not about giving away the “best” part — that’s the part worth keeping secret for the privy listener… it’s about sharing the seductive, relaxing allure that will draw a person into the fantasy, into you, and into your trance.

I’ve heard too many times to count that samples sell recordings. Giving people a taste of “what is to come” will peak their curiosity for a long time – even if someone doesn’t purchase it right away, they may come back to it months later. This is the way of the game. To master the game is to develop the art of securing a damn good sample and letting people play it over and over until they simply can’t help themselves anymore — eventually – if the sample is a successful one – the listener will want to hear more… and more… and more.

Generally a good sample is about 60 seconds. If you give away too much, the listener may not feel inclined to buy the full recording if the sample alone can “get them off.” On the other hand, a sexy spicy giveaway can lead a person towards craving much more! Sometimes a sample can go up to 2 minutes if there’s a lot of pauses and empty silence – this way the potential buyer understands the mood that will be set later.

Sometimes I like to splice 3 samples and play them for friends and ask them which one would entice them to buy to hear more; then I pick the best one.
